We have a limited amount of work
opportunities
on a seasonal basis here on the farm. We offer two on
farm apprenticeships each growing season, and apprentices are offered use of
our rustic cabin for lodging. Farm hours can be long and strenuous, but if
one is interested in learning how to grow food crops in an organic way, the
learning opportunities are endless!
Apprentices can expect to work
40-50 hours a week, and be instructed in such methods as seed starting,
greenhouse and hoop house growing, field work, prepping vegetables for
market, selling produce and interacting with our customers at market, and
more. Apprentices can also expect to learn self sufficiency and simple
homesteading living skills as well as other skills to be discussed upon
hiring based on need and desire. We are interested in the development and
education of future farmers and we are dedicated to making your
apprenticeship here on the farm enriching for both of us. Apprentices are
provided farm fresh meals for breakfast and lunch, and often we eat outside,
weather permitting. Apprenticeships are expected to last the duration of the
season, and working interviews will be scheduled to make sure its a good fit
for all before acceptance.
In addition to the traditional farm
apprenticeship position, we are also offering
a new position this year, the farmwyfe apprentice. This apprentice will
learn a half-time traditional farm apprenticeship, and in addition will
learn traditional farm kitchen skills as well. These skills may include but
are not limited to scratch cooking, wood-fired oven baking, all forms of
food preservation, cheese making, herbal medicine making, soap making, wild
foraging and more….
If interested in on-farm learning
opportunities, compensation and more details,
please send us a letter of interest, and details about your desire to learn
and any previous experience you may have in farm work. The letter of
interest can either be sent via
email or to the farm directly at: Blue Dog
Family Farm, 130 Hastings Court, Bangor, MI 49013.
